- The following are instructions for patching your copy of Sargon IV (Mac) so
- that it will work on newer Mac computers. Apart from this patch, Sargon
- crashes on any Mac later than the IIci due to some kind of a ROM conflict.
-
- To apply this patch, you'll need a hex editor capable of editing a file's
- resource fork directly. You could probably use ResEdit, but I don't know
- which CODE resource needs modified (there are several). I used Norton Disk
- Editor (part of Norton Utilities). There's also an old freeware progam
- called FEdit that would do it, as well as some others that I'm probably not
- familiar with (Central Point MacTools?).
-
- As always, work only on a _copy_ of Sargon, not on the original disk
- verison. If you badly botch something (which is very possible editing hex),
- you can just toss it and make a new copy to try again.
-
- Here are the instructions, as they worked for me in Norton:
-
- 1. Open the resource fork of Sargon IV.
-
- 2. Search for the following hex bytes:
-
- 226F 0004 5229 FFDA 337C 000A 000A
-
- and change the first 4 bytes so it looks like....
-
- 2248 4E71 5229 FFDA 337C 000A 000A
-
- 3. Find the next occurance of
-
- 226F 0004
-
- and change to
-
- 2248 4E71
-
- 4. Save the changes and quit Norton.
-
- Sargon IV has worked flawlessly on my Centris 610 with system 7.1, caches on,
- 32 bit processing on. I've had one crash on my PowerBook 160, when I put the
- system to sleep while Sargon was thinking. Otherwise, it works normally! The
- original poster on rec.games.chess cautioned about program switching under
- System 7 or Multifinder while Sargon is thinking. I haven't seen this type of
- crash yet, but rarely switch out while playing a game anyway.
